Oxalis triangularis Houseplant Care

Oxalis Triangularis is a perennial plant that belongs to the family Oxalidaceae. The plant has triangular-shaped leaves that are deep purple on the upper side and light purple on the underside.

Oxalis Triangularis is native to Brazil, where it grows in the understory of humid, shaded forests. In the wild, it typically grows in soil that is rich in organic matter and has good drainage. It is often found growing alongside other shade-loving plants such as ferns, bromeliads, and orchids.

The plant is well adapted to its native environment and has several unique features that help it thrive in the wild. One such feature is its ability to go dormant during periods of drought or other adverse conditions. When conditions become unfavourable, the plant will retract its leaves and go into a state of dormancy until the conditions improve.

Another unique feature of Oxalis Triangularis is its nyctinastic behavior. In the wild, the plant's leaves will close up at night as a way of protecting itself from nocturnal herbivores and insects. This behaviour is thought to be controlled by a circadian rhythm that is linked to changes in light levels.

Overall, the purple shamrock is a hardy plant that is well adapted to growing in humid, shaded environments. Its unique features and striking appearance make it a fascinating plant to observe both in the wild and in cultivation.

Growing Conditions: Oxalis Triangularis is a relatively easy plant to care for, and it can tolerate a wide range of conditions. However, to ensure healthy growth and vibrant foliage, it is important to provide the following growing conditions: Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn its delicate leaves, so it is important to avoid placing it in a south-facing window or other areas with intense sunlight.

Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures between 15 to 24°C. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures in the winter, but it is important to avoid placing it near drafts or areas with extreme temperature fluctuations.

Soil: Oxalis Triangularis prefers a well-draining soil mix that is consistently moist. It is important to avoid overwatering the plant, as it is sensitive to root rot. Humidity: This plant thrives in humid environments, so it is important to provide some level of humidity. You can do this by placing a tray of water near the plant or by misting it with water.

Fertiliser: To promote healthy growth, fertilise the plant every 2-3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser.

Our organic indoor plant food is made from Seaweed, harvested sustainably. Seaweed provides a delicate blend of growth hormones and micronutrients that is perfect for all indoor plants. Houseplants grow throughout spring, summer and autumn, so they will benefit from organic fertiliser during this time to encourage flowering and keep them healthy and well.

Suppose you have been searching for alternatives to blood, bone and other so-called “organic” fertilisers. In that case, our original organic Vegan Plant food is for you and is sold exclusively through our website.

Care Tips: To ensure healthy growth and vibrant foliage, it is important to follow the care tips listed below:

Watering: Oxalis Triangularis prefers consistently moist soil, but it is important to avoid overwatering the plant. It is best to wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering it again.

Pruning: To promote healthy growth and prevent leggy stems, it is important to prune the plant regularly. You can do this by pinching back the tips of the stems or by removing any dead or damaged leaves.

Dormancy: Oxalis Triangularis goes dormant in the winter months, during which it will lose its leaves and appear dead. However, this is a normal part of the plant's life cycle, and it will grow back in the spring.

Pest Control: This plant is relatively pest-resistant, but it can be susceptible to spider mites or aphids. If you notice any pests on the plant, you can treat it with an insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Styling Options: Oxalis Triangularis can be styled in a variety of ways, including in a hanging basket, on a windowsill, or as part of a larger plant collection. Its vibrant purple leaves make it a striking addition to any space, and its unique nyctinasty behavior adds an element of intrigue to any indoor garden.

Travel Tips: While the purple shamrock is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for indoor plant, it is worth noting that it does not travel well and it can take a few days to recover from the stress of being transported.

If you receive a purple shamrock by post, it is important to unpack it carefully and give it some time to acclimate to its new environment. The plant may appear wilted or droopy at first, but with some patience and care, it should start to perk up within a few days.

Once the plant has recovered from shipping, it will reward you with its vibrant purple leaves and delicate flowers. With the right growing conditions and care, the purple shamrock can be a stunning addition to any indoor garden.

In conclusion, Oxalis Triangularis 'purple shamrock' is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for indoor plant that adds a pop of color to any space. By following the growing conditions, care tips, and styling options listed above, you can enjoy its vibrant purple foliage and delicate flowers year-round. So, if you are looking for a low-maintenance plant that adds a touch of uniqueness and charm to your indoor garden, then the purple shamrock is definitely worth considering!

I have this plant. So gorgeous.
I was worried about killing it, as so fragile, especially the flowers and there stems. A couple of them died, but I hope more will grow. I’ve just repoted it, and forgot to take some roots to grow more.
