In the district of Rukungiri, South West Uganda, Bridge of Hope Children’s Ministry has created a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children through its Bridge of Hope Children’s Village. Established in September 2011, the village comprises two homes and a school, offering care, education, and opportunities for 27 orphans and abandoned children.
A Loving Home and Caring Family
The two homes are set in a spacious grassy compound, designed to provide a safe, loving, and family-like atmosphere. Each child is cared for by two dedicated live-in House Mothers, who have been with the children since the homes opened. Their team is supported by two Aunts and an Uncle, creating a close-knit, supportive family unit. A wardenvisits daily to engage with the children and provide additional support to the staff.
To ensure daily operations run smoothly:
- A local helper manages the laundry by hand, as the site has no electricity.
- A night-time security guard ensures the safety of the children and staff.
Teaching Life Skills for the Future
Bridge of Hope is committed to equipping children with essential life skills to prepare them for independent adulthood. Activities include:
- Growing and cooking food
- Chopping wood and cleaning
- Washing clothes and dishes
- Learning basket weaving and simple crafts, which could provide income in the future.
The village’s resident goats and chickens also offer the children hands-on experience in animal care, further enhancing their skills and self-sufficiency.
Fostering Play and Development
The latest initiative, the Bridge of Hope Youth Sports Development Programme, provides children with a chance to simply enjoy being kids. Through weekly sessions, they can have fun, learn valuable skills, and build friendships in a safe, structured environment.
