Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy, commonly known as the Silver Sprinkles Pilea or Grey Artillery Plant, is a stunning houseplant that belongs to the Urticaceae family. This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, specifically in Brazil and Venezuela, where it grows as an understory plant in shaded areas.

In the wild, Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy grows as a perennial plant, with its stems growing up to 8 inches long and its leaves growing up to 6mm in diameter.
The leaves are small and circular, have a stunning silver-green colour, and have a slightly rippled texture. The plant produces tiny, white flowers that appear in clusters on long, thin stems but are not particularly showy.

Pilea glaucophylla has become a popular houseplant because of its unique foliage. The leaves have a stunning silvery-green colour that shimmers in the light, and the slightly rippled texture of the leaves gives the plant an interesting and attractive appearance. Additionally, the plant is easy to care for and grows relatively quickly, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

The discovery of Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy is not well documented. It's believed to have been first discovered in the early 20th century. One theory is that it was discovered by a botanist named Friedrich Diels, who explored the rainforests of Brazil and Venezuela in the early 1900s. However, this has yet to be confirmed.

The small leaves of Pilea glaucophylla result from its natural adaptation to its shaded environment in the rainforest. The plant has evolved to have small leaves to maximize its surface area for photosynthesis while minimizing its water loss through transpiration. The silver-green colour of the leaves is also a result of this adaptation, as it helps to reflect sunlight and reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the plant.

Its tiny leaves result from its adaptation to its shaded environment. Its unique foliage and easy care make it a popular choice among houseplant enthusiasts.

Pilea glaucophylla is also a fabulous terrarium, vivarium or paludarium plant because of its small leaves. The plant thrives in humid environments, and the small leaves work perfectly in small spaces, naturally growing and wilding quickly without dominating the planting scheme.

This is also the perfect plant for aquascapers looking for a terrestrial plant to create shade - its wilds beautifully along emersed hardscapes. It will also naturally cascade, covering filters and tubes and is a much prettier and more suitable choice than the larger-leafed pothos for nano tanks due to its smaller-scaled leaves.

A great small houseplant, this fashionable little plant would make a wonderful gift - leave a gift message at checkout, and we’ll include a free, handwritten card for your special recipient. No paperwork either to spoil the surprise!

How to care for Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy

This plant is easy to care for and grows relatively quickly, making it an excellent choice for beginners. It will grow in shaded areas but does better with the morning sun to the early afternoon. It will tolerate some drought but is vulnerable to missed watering, so it is helpful to keep this plant always damp but ensure it has good drainage to avoid root rot.

Where should I put Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy?

It will love lots of bright, indirect light - and can take some sunny spots too.

How should I water Pilea Glaucophylla Greyzy?

You should water only when it is starting to dry out - try the top two inches of soil; if these are dry, soak the plant through and allow it to drain.

Should I feed it?

You can feed once a month in spring and summer - try our organic plant food!

Our organic indoor plant food is made from Seaweed, harvested sustainably. Seaweed provides a delicate blend of growth hormones and micronutrients that are perfect for all indoor plants.
